Protect Yourself from Email Scams

These days, so many things can now be done online, and these include shopping and even transferring funds. Many tasks are made easier by technology and through the use of email, you can perform these tasks quickly and efficiently. Email is, however, also being used by scammers for their own purposes.

Becoming aware of email scams

You might receive an email telling you that you have won a contest or promotion, but that you’re required to transfer some of your own money to a certain bank account before you get the prize. Email scams such as this are supposed to be ignored. After all, if you won a prize, the person emailing you should not be asking you to transfer any funds. As commonsensical as this sounds, there are still some people who fall for such email scams. You should also be wary of emails asking you to provide them with your bank information. In case the email seems legit, you should still call your bank and ask them if they have sent you that particular message. After all, it might just be a greedy person looking to hack into your account or steal your identity.

Avoiding email scams

You can avoid email scams by not opening or reading email messages that come from senders you’re not familiar with. In case you open a message and it just contains an attachment, refrain from opening it because it might contain spyware. Some people also send attachments that are actually programs that you can install. If you’ve been provided with this and don’t know what it’s for, don’t install it because it might be a program that provides confidential information from your email to the person who sent it to you.
